How we work

Our process

A beautiful home is the sum of many decisions, made well and in the right order. Our process has been refined over more than thirty years. It is personal, unhurried where it matters and exacting about every detail. It works the same way whether your house is across the street from the studio or across the country.

The process

From first conversation to final placement

Each stage is presented for your approval before the next begins, so nothing is decided without you.

  1. The first conversation

We begin by listening. How you live, what you love, how the house should feel. We talk openly about scope, investment and timing, so the project starts on clear ground. The conversation can take place in the studio, in your home or by video, whichever suits you.

  2. Discovery

Next we come to know the house itself: its architecture, its light, its views and the way you move through it. We visit in person or work from plans, photographs and measurements, and we meet your architect and builder if they are already involved.

  3. Concept and space planning

Floor plans and furniture layouts come first, because a room has to work before it can be beautiful. Then a design direction takes shape: palette, materials and mood, each one answering the architecture and the view.

  4. Design development

Every finish, fixture, light, fabric and piece of furniture is selected, refined and presented for your approval. You see the materials in person before anything is ordered, at the studio or with samples sent to your home.

  5. Ordering and project management

The studio places every order and follows it through production, freight, receiving and delivery. On site, we work alongside your architect, builder and trades, so the decisions made in the studio are carried out in the house.

  6. Installation

Furniture is placed, art is hung, beds are dressed and the last details are set. You walk into a home that is complete, calm and entirely yours.

Interior design services

The right service for the moment

more on our services

Every home comes to us at a different moment. Some are still lines on an architect's plan. Some are well loved and ready for change. Our services are shaped around those moments, and each carries the same attention and the same standard.

Whole-house design

The complete commission: every room, every surface, every piece, composed as one.

What it includes
Space planning and interior architecture; millwork, cabinetry and built-ins; finish, fixture and lighting plans; furniture, upholstery, window treatments, rugs, art and accessories. The interiors are designed as a whole, so the house reads as one calm, considered place.
Who it is for
Clients building a new home with an architect and builder, and clients who have bought a house they want to make entirely their own. It suits a primary residence and a second home alike.
How it runs
Whole-house design follows the full process, from the first conversation to installation. On new construction we join early, ideally while the plans are still being drawn, so millwork, lighting and finishes are resolved together with the furniture plan rather than one after another.

Remodels

For houses with good bones and rooms that no longer work.

What it includes
Kitchens, baths, primary suites and whole-house remodels: reworked floor plans, new millwork and cabinetry, finishes, fixtures and lighting, followed by furnishing so that the finished rooms are complete.
Who it is for
Owners who love where they live but not how the house lives, and buyers who can see what a house could become. Aspen Renovation and Sun Valley Renovation, both in the portfolio, show the result.
How it runs
We begin with the house as it stands, then design the changes with you in drawings and selections. Through construction we work closely with your contractor and guide you through budgets and timelines as decisions arise. When the work is done, we furnish and install.

Furniture-only projects

For homes where the architecture is finished and the rooms are waiting.

What it includes
A furniture plan for every room; custom and to-the-trade upholstery and case pieces; rugs, lighting, window treatments, art and accessories. Nothing is built. Everything is chosen.
Who it is for
New homes, newly purchased homes and second homes. It also suits builders who want a home furnished to show how it can be lived in, the approach behind our Silverleaf Spec residence.
How it runs
We study the plans and the rooms, present a furniture plan and selections, and send samples for your approval. The studio then orders, tracks and receives every piece and installs the house, so you arrive to rooms that are finished.

Refreshes

A lighter touch, for rooms that need new life rather than new walls.

What it includes
New fabrics and upholstery, window treatments, rugs, lighting, art and accessories, paint and wallcovering, with the pieces you already love edited and given new places. A refresh can focus on a few rooms or carry through the whole house, whatever the home needs.
Who it is for
Homes that are well built but no longer feel like you. Houses that have seen a few good years of family life. A second home ready for its next season.
How it runs
The same stages at a lighter scale: a conversation, a walkthrough in person or by video, a focused set of selections and one careful installation.

Nationwide

Working together from anywhere

Dining room at CDA Lakehouse, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, interior design by Paul Lauren Designs

Our studio is in Scottsdale. Our clients are not all here, and they have never needed to be. The studio's work has followed clients to Aspen, Sun Valley, Coeur d'Alene, Park City, San Diego, Pacific Palisades, Texas and Montana, and over the years we have refined a way of working that makes distance easy.

  • Consultations by video

Our first conversation, and many after it, can take place by video, at times that suit your schedule and your time zone. You meet Lauren and Kendra from the start, exactly as you would in the studio.

  • Presentations you can see clearly

Plans, layouts and selections are presented online, room by room, with time to talk through every decision. Nothing moves forward until you have approved it.

  • Samples sent to your home

Fabrics, finishes and materials come to you, so you can judge them in your own light and in your own rooms, which is where they will live.

  • Ordering, freight and delivery, handled

The studio places every order, follows it through production and manages freight and delivery to your home. You are kept informed at every step and never left to chase a shipment.

  • Your local builder and trades

We work with your architect, builder and trades wherever the house is, sharing drawings and specifications and staying in close contact through construction.

  • On site when it matters

We travel to the house as the project requires. For site visits and installation we bring our own team together with the best local trades, so the finished home is placed and styled by the people who designed it.

Distance changes the logistics. It does not change the attention. A home in Montana receives the same care as a home in Silverleaf.
